The Significance behind Rajasthan International Film Festival (RIFF)

Like every year, this year too Jodhpur’s Rajasthan International Film Festival will begin with a bang from tomorrow (5th – 9th October). This annual music and art festival is held at Mehrangarh Fort where thousands of people from around the world join in this festival, celebrating culture and traditions of the forty state.

Termed and popularly known as ‘Jodhpur RIFF’ this is organised by a not-for-profit partnership project which involves two leading heritage trusts of India: Mehrangarh Museum Trust and Jaipur Virasat Foundation. It is a joint initiative that is led by Chief Patron of Jodhpur HH Gaj Singh (Marwa, Joudhpur) and as International Patron by Mick Jagger, the lead member of Rolling Stones.

This event basically features a series of concerts, cultural performances, folklore, art and events based in Rajasthan. More than 250 musicians and artists come forward to showcase their art in front of the mass gathering on an open stage. The main aim behind holding this fest is to preserve the cultural heritage of Rajasthan and the art forms that are diminishing due to modern takeover. People are now more attracted towards the pop culture that these art forms are slowly dying. These are medium through which people still earn their livelihoods and hold sincere respect for them. The need to make people aware of the importance of such symbols that has now gave birth to their modern versions, is a need to be given uttermost importance.

This festival has also being recognised as “People’s platform for creativity and sustainable development” by UNESCO. In 2012 and 2013, RIFF was regarded by Songlines in a list of best 25 best international festivals. After the 2015th edition acclaimed the heights of success, this year’s fest is one of the highly anticipated by the people. Don’t miss to catch a glimpse of this amazing festival!
